Synopsis
“Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon),to help unite the country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his country remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to win the 1995 World Cup. |

Verdict
Heartfelt and compassionate, “Invictus” is an interesting portrait of the healing of a nation through the prism of sport. As Nelson Mandela, Morgan Freeman brings real authority to his role as “Matiba”- the father of the South African nation. As South African rugby Captain Francois Pienaar, Matt Damon has never been better. Sadly, the film does lack passion and urgency as the narrative unfolds-leading to some ponderous longeurs. Nevertheless, the film is always watchable when the two stars are on the screen-resulting in a competent case study on how sport can bring a divided nation together. |
