Synopsis

The latest incarnation of “STAR TREK” takes place when the youthful Kirk, Spock, Bones etc first enter Starfleet Command, and go on their first space voyage.

Waiting for them is a dastardly Romulan (Eric Bana), who was responsible for the death of Jim Kirk’s father and has been biding his time to finish off his son as well.!

Verdict

Some re-imaginings of iconic favourites have worked in the past (like Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise), while some haven’t (Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes). This happily is situated in the former category, with a complete reboot which feels modern, fresh and absorbing throughout.

Although Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will never have the same heft as their predecessors, they both inject passion and wit into a story which fizzes with kinetic energy. The only problem with the story is the re-introduction of Leonard Nimoy as the aged Spock which seems completely out of place with the rest of the film.

In fact, the script is sometimes confusing. Nevertheless, J.J Abrams has injected spirit, bravado and has kept the same basic ethic of “boldly going where no man has gone before” with same ethnically diverse mixture of characters, If this anything to go by, beam me up Scotty for the next adventure!
